School districts must annually provide instruction to students in grades K-12 related to youth substance use and abuse health education. Using the health education standards adopted in Rule 6A-1.09401, F.A.C., Student Performance Standards, the instruction for substance use and abuse education will advance each year through developmentally appropriate instruction and skill building.

In order to meet these mandated state requirements in grades K-5, students will receive instruction using the Generation Rx prevention curriculum. This curriculum was carefully reviewed and selected by a school district committee. Generation Rx is a developmentally appropriate curriculum that teaches substance use and abuse prevention education regarding four basic medication safety principles:

  • only take medicine from individuals that a parent (or guardian) gives permission;
  • do not share medication or take someone else’s medication;
  • keep medications in their original containers to avoid confusion with candy or other medicines;
  • always store medicine in a safe place, such as a locked cabinet or a high shelf that children cannot reach.

The School District of Lee County, as well as several other school Districts across the state, has chosen the Edgenuity Purpose Prep prevention curriculum to fulfill these requirements in grades 6-12. Edgenuity Purpose Prep is a developmentally appropriate, comprehensive offering with unique lessons focused on equipping students with strategies, resources and awareness related to the topics prescribed in the State Board of Education Rules.
