Mission/Vision

Program Overview

The Department of Juvenile Justice teachers are located at the Ortiz site and the Lee County Jail, and serve students enrolled in the Lee County School District at a critical time in their lives. While awaiting trial and sentencing, or while incarcerated, the Lee County School District and the Lee County Sheriff's Office have worked jointly to provide a wide range of individualized instruction in all subject areas for these individuals. Instruction for both students enrolled in general education classes and specialized instruction with modifications to the grade level curriculum for students with disabilities is available, and participation is encouraged. Instruction occurs in a variety of orderly and respectful settings and is flexible based on student need. The School District of Lee County and Lee County Sheriff's Office provides an education that is both comprehensive and practical and encourages these young men and women to continue to learn in order to become productive members of society.

The inmates are trained by professional dog handlers in all aspects of obedience training, leash training, proper grooming, and the care and nutrition of their dogs. The dog remains with its handler for at least twelve weeks and sleeps in a cage next to his bed.

At the end of the twelve week course, the dogs are evaluated and those who pass their evaluation are put up for adoption. Through this program inmates are focus and learn a sense of responsibility. Inmates also learn marketable job skills, and attain a sense of satisfaction doing something positive for the dog and the community.

New Directions Program

New Directions is a 60 day, faith based program that is designed to equip inmates with the tools they need to change thoughts, actions and attitudes that have caused them so much difficulty in the past through a spiritual perspective. At the end of the 60 days, inmates will have been taught many subject matters, such as: not giving up, not settling for second best, difference between need and want, taking ownership of one's actions, anger, grief, steps to recovery, faith-based Life Skills, overcoming adversity, and the power of the mind.

It's purpose and focus is to see inmates not only change their lives, but that they begin to positively impact their community not just by words they speak but by the steps they take. It is the program's goal to develop a mentality of a doer of the Word, not just a hearer.

Adult Education/GED

For those adult inmates who were unable to complete their high school education, we offer the opportunity for study and testing for the General Education Development (GED). These services are provided by Lee County Sheriff's Office staff members who are also certified teachers.

These classes assess, test and evaluate students who learn at their own pace in the areas of writing, reading, math, social studies, and science. Upon completion of the coursework and successful testing, students will receive an official high school diploma from the State Education Office in Tallahassee, FL.

Prevention

Contracted with Lee County Board of Education

Students eighteen (18) years of age or younger or students with disabilities until their 22nd birthday, who do not have a High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) and are housed in the Corrections Bureau facilities, qualify for educational services while incarcerated.

Educational services provided at the facility are taught by certified Lee County Public School District teachers who follow the school calendar and curriculum.
